Knowledge, Attitude, and Preventive Health Behavior of High School Students on the Six Most Common Cancers in Korea

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine high school students¡¯ Knowledge, attitude, and preventive health behaviors for the six most common cancers in Korea.

Method: Participants were 1,600 high school students in Daegu. Quata sampling was done by the ratio of sex and school type. Data collection was done from March 8 to 20, 2004, and 1,581 responses were analyzed. Questionnaires about cancer-related Knowledge, attitude, and preventive health behaviors were used. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Pearson correlation in SPSS/WIN 11.0.

Result: Mean score of the knowledge was 3.11(0.44), attitude 3.02(0.36), and preventive health behavior 3.36(0.41). The knowledge were different according to sex, school type, grade, number of health education, and concern about the cancers. Attitude were different according to grade, number of health education, concern about the cancers, and health status. Preventive health behavior were different according to the number of health education, concern about the cancers, and health status. The preventive health behavior were significantly correlated to the knowledge and attitude(r=0.0228, p=0.003; r=0.439, p=0.000).

Conclusion: Based on the result the number of health education affected on the knowledge, attitude, and preventive health behavior, systematic health education about cancer for high school students is suggested.
